Nancy’s Bio:

Nancy Juetten is no stranger to pivoting and preparing to prosper during challenging times. When the Great Recession hit, her public relations firm crashed. She was forced to find a new way to serve quickly so she had enough money to pay the mortgage. She created her popular book Bye-Bye Boring Bio on a dare from a friend.  That book saved her bacon when she really needed to bring it home and became the foundation for a successful online business that grew despite her discomfort with technology. When ‘real life’ hit the fan for close friends and her own family in 2018, she and her husband Steve created the Life Goes On Roadmap system for personal financial information to help families escape the drama, trauma and chaos of finding crucial documents and personal financial information at the worst possible times.  Guiding entrepreneurs and families to prepare for opportunities has been a common theme throughout Nancy’s career. She’s the first to say that challenging times can be the catalyst to step into your finest hour of service, if you can just shift your mindset and get to work.

It’s A Small World After All – We’re All In This Together!

Hello World!

It’s A Small World After All – We’re All In This Together!

Everyone has had an experience of that “small world” feeling when you discover that someone that you’ve only just met knows someone you know, or in some cases seemingly everyone you know. Applying six degree principles has been at the forefront of my mind as it relates to Covid-19. Specifically I’ve been wondering how we can turn the tide in our favor by using small world principles.

Uncovering just how connected we truly are has been on my mind since the mid-90s when I started to informally bring together women to have critical conversations on specific topics centered around their small businesses. The group of women came to be known as the Women in Small Biz, now named Women’s EmPOWERment Marketplace. At first the group resembled a coffee klatch, but within a short time the women began referring business to one another and tens of thousands of dollars of referral opportunities were being exchanged serving 5,000+ women, and bold men too.

Along the way I discovered the paradigm of six degrees of separation as well as synchronicity. The Science of Networks Professor, Steve Strogatz, uncovered that the phenomenon synchronicity played an intrinsic role in connectivity. He asked himself two questions: “How can a population of dissimilar individuals suddenly synchronize? How can a planet of billions really be connected?” From the intricate synaptic connections in your brain to the heart’s ability to synchronize in order to produce a heartbeat, it turns out connections are required.

Duncan Watts, another mathematician and researcher, devoted his life to the research of synchronicity. Together Watts and Strogatz studied snowy tree crickets as they began investigating synchronicity. Essentially, they discovered that these crickets were behaving as a group, but who was listening? Which cricket was the leader? They discovered the intricate structure of the networks and have concluded that it is the hubs that are critical to the network’s survival.

Hubs, like Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Facebook, etc., have become critical to the internet, but even more important to social networks. Is it possible that six degrees of separation has been reduced to two to three connections or steps instead? Individuals who act like hubs are also reducing the number of steps to link folks to the outside world – globally, regionally, and nationally.

Strogantz and Watts wanted to prove their theory. In the mid-90s, college students created a game that turned out to be coined Six Degrees of Separation of Kevin Bacon. A few random link shrinks connections to about three or four: real evidence that small worlds do exist. Watts says, “Invisible links make the world small.” (Connected Power of Six Degrees Science)

Significance of Hubs

Hungarian scientists Albert Aslow, and Isaac Asimov asked, “What can I do to predict the future – the structure and the behavior of the network?” Events depend on one another. Data studied was on the World Wide Web, tracing links and growth of web pages. The distribution did not follow a random bell curve; most had very few links and a very few had tens of thousands of links – the hubs. It seemed to have an organizing principle of organization.

Watts shared Kevin Bacon data finding hubs in Hollywood. Watts’ hunch suggests a deeper truth. Hubs evolve according to some pattern from within the human cell to telecommunications. He and Strogatz broke it down to a simple formula and concluded that networks have both strengths and weaknesses. Cells have tens of thousands of errors, but they function nonetheless. If you remove the hubs, the system will fall apart. Watts concludes: “Society – certain people, are much more connected to others than the rest of us.”

Although I wrote much of what is above years ago, it occurs to me that we might be able to change the impact coronavirus is having on our world by lessening its impact through educating the public. Can we identify hubs and people who act as hubs to spread important public health information more quickly than is currently occurring?

What if we had a press pack, PDF files to download signs, approved social cards, etc., with the same message. Would it be possible to educate the larger audience that needs the key public health messages? Without global buy-in as to what needs to be done, we may lose more lives.

Do you consider yourself a hub? Together we can make a difference by offering to do our part to spread approved public health information.

It’s a small world, you make a difference. Take action! We’re all in this together.

Just a few thoughts from me to you.

Warmly,

Bettina Carey

“There’s The Thing You Do For A Living & Then There’s The Thing You Were Born To Do” – Marrying Your Passion With Profit!

Today, people are looking beyond simply having a job. Instead of dedicating themselves to a company, putting their work above all else, they want to find a purpose in their work. They want to be and remain healthy, experience more joy and love, make more money and feel abundant. Making a profit feels much better when they’re also serving their families and communities with passion and purpose. It’s about balance and people find it in different ways: working for someone else’s company, large or small, or starting  their own small business. They want to have financial freedom so they can choose how to use their money, whether that’s getting out of debt, sending a child to college, improving their health, or traveling and seeing the world.

Having  your own business can allow you to create a product or provide a service of your own that aligns your passion with profit, leave a business to pass on to your children and, hopefully, give you time to spend with your family, as well as to travel.

In 2017 I read a powerful remark in Oprah magazine:

“There’s the thing you do for a living — and then there’s the thing you were born to do. If your dream is to make them one and the same, you’ve come to the right place.” (Patti Smith, Oprah Magazine, November 2010)

At that point, I had been running my own lifestyle business for 25 years. Reading this, I realized it perfectly described my life. I know there are many women who want to embark on that journey, and that is what drives me to share more about how I started my business, but more importantly, how I’ve been able to keep it going all of these years.

In 1993 I experienced a slip-and-fall accident that took me out of the workplace as I’d known it, working as a nurse in both traditional settings and home care. After an initial recovery, it became clear that the pain in my neck and, literally, my ass, was not going to relent. In fact, it would take more than six years to finally stop. As I accepted that pain was going to be a part of my every waking moment, it seemed a good time to make some changes in my career.

I’m not exactly certain what I was thinking when I jumped off the proverbial cliff. I decided to approach my massage therapist and friend to rent an office from her, and the next thing I knew I had an office, put office stuff in the office, and then started the long journey to discover everything I could about starting and running a small business. I hadn’t a clue. Since I had nothing better to do with my time as I could hardly walk across the room without crying out, why not do something that would take my mind off my pain? My Type A personality wouldn’t allow me to just lay around, so it seemed like a possible option.

As I was Registered Nurse and B.S.N., I decided to start a healthcare marketing company. Coincidentally the month that I had fallen, December 1992, I had met a woman who had an interesting printed product that she sold to doctors’ offices around the country that helped educate women about their pregnancy. She had been looking for someone to help her with sales, marketing, promotions, and more. I didn’t understand these concepts, but I told her I had developed a knack for educating and promoting others. After some discussions we agreed to work with each other, and I signed my first of many contracts. Over the span of eight years, she taught me a great deal about running a business and we ultimately took her materials to a whole new level.

And, so I began my journey to marry my passion with my purpose. Unknowingly, I had embarked on what I would later call my version of “El Camino de Santiago” that would have many twists and turns, go uphill and down, be full of a Pandora’s box full of possibilities and harrowing experiences as well.

Essentially, as Paulo Coelho, a Brazilian lyricist and novelist, put it, “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the story of El Camino de Santiago, let me digress… It is a network of pilgrimages that lead to the shrine of Saint James the Great in the Santiago de Compostela cathedral in Spain where, perhaps, the remains of the saint are buried. Some people use it as a form of spiritual growth while others simply love to hike or bike it.

Now let me tell you that, in truth, I had no idea what I was doing when I started my company and became a tenant with an office lease. I was a nurse for gosh sake. What did I know about running a small business, never mind the fact that I was experiencing intractable pain? Well, as they say, “What you don’t know may hurt you.” In retrospect it was a good thing I didn’t know what the stats related to starting a small business, particularly for women, were or I might have thrown in the towel early.

I’d been practicing as an OB/GYN (obstetrics/gynecological) nurse since 1984. I migrated to home care in 1991 and then stumbled into marketing at my first home care company where I was hired to split my time doing presentations in doctors’ offices and home care for high risk pregnant women.

In a word, I simply “loved” my new-found passion. I’d had passion and intuition and purpose with my nursing career, but marketing really tapped my other talents for making connections, winning others over, thinking strategically, and communicating verbally. I would learn much later that my number one strength was being a connector (according to a Strength Finders 2.0 assessment).

So while I was trying everything to recover my physical well-being, I found myself running a business, and if that wasn’t enough, I ran for president of a small medical organization. Have I mentioned yet that I was also a single mother?

I became the president of the organization and, with the help of my team, grew it into a large body. It inspired me to start a female women’s business group which came to be known as Women in Small Biz. After about five years of running both groups, I chose to focus on Women in Small Biz and began hosting larger-scale meetings, conferences, and ultimately a summit.

After eight long years of dedication to both the product that I was selling and to the woman that I’d been representing, the time came for us to go our separate ways. It wasn’t easy, but we severed our ties and life moved on.

Why do I share my story? Because there are many ways to marry your passion with purpose; this is just one way that one woman made it happen. Although I’ve continued to evolve personally and in business—owning a boutique marketing, promotion, and publishing agency—it hasn’t always been easy, and I’ve had to pivot and adjust along the way. Even so, starting my business has been one of the best decisions that I have ever made.

If you’d like to talk about marrying what you were born to do for a living with your idea for a lifestyle business and making them one in the same, you’ve come to the right place! I’d love to help you marry your passion with your profit! Call for a complimentary call at, 206-349-4297.

Ask A Woman If She Feels Empowered In All Areas of Her Life… If She’s Honest She’ll Likely Say, “No!”

83027110_10157459521224733_4108179348685586432_n

Ask a woman if she feels empowered in all areas of her life? If she’s honest she’ll likely say, “no!” Why is that? It’s my belief that the answer lies within self-limiting beliefs that have kept us from fully expressing our talents, intelligence and power. My intention in writing, “Breaking Through Your Own Glass Ceiling: Unlocking Your Full and Hidden Potential With Your Master Key” is to help readers replace those self-limiting beliefs instead with empowering beliefs.

You’ve heard it said, “to do epic shit you need an epic belief in yourself!” That said, many of us, through no fault of our own, have a mindset that works against us. Whether that be self-sabotage, suffering from impostor syndrome or experiencing self-loathing due to body image, the impact can be devastating to our self-esteem and self-worth. Then when we go out into the workplace we don’t negotiate for more, we don’t’ apply for work that we could easily do nor ask for what we’re worth. I’ve found that in order to transform the mind one must then control the mind. Yes, we all need to learn to practice “mind control” over our own mind (not the mind of others).

To use this book effectively it is fair to say that you will also need to keep an open mind and be willing to practice modalities that impact your mind-set well until they work for you. (meditation, practice the power of presence, mantras, etc.). Using one or more of the recommended modalities will drive the results that you desire. The key will be to practice diligently.

In every chapter there’s a quote and stories that I hope you will embrace. Treat the quotes as mantras to use when you are triggered or about to enter into a situation or conversation when your empowerment will be tested. Train your brain to respond when you repeat the mantra or remember a particular story. Many of the stories are shared memories with other women’s souls who intersect mine and our quest to become master communicators, to speak pro-actively, to listen empathetically in ways that command respect and trust.

If you are a woman who has not owned your own home, has not had your own credit card, do not have or have not exercised your right to vote, or you don’t feel that you have a choice to stay or go in all of your personal or working relationships, then I invite you to dive deeper into this book to explore your belief system and embrace practices that enhance your inner power so that your voice can truly be heard and you come to feel empowered in all areas of your life.

How do I define empowerment? “Empowerment is about change, choice and power. It is the process of change by which individuals or groups with little or no power and ability make choices that affect their lives.” (Cheston & Kuhn)

In the words of Marian York (deceased, 2007): “Many women are still finding their voice and seeking the words that are right for them to fully express their talents, intelligence and power. Your words are your ambassadors, they open and shut doors as they tell others how to treat you and what to believe about you.” She often also said, “it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.”

Most people reading both the definition of empowerment presented here and Marian’s potent words of empowerment will agree that the conversation of empowerment is shared by both men and women, but that women bear the heavier load in living empowered lives.

Why do I believe we have the heavier load? Well, although the Sixty-Sixth Congress of the Unites States of America passed a joint resolution on June 4, 1919 and ratified on August 18, 1920 granting women the right to vote, many women around the world still cannot vote, still cannot own land, still cannot drive, still cannot own their own assets, still cannot raise their own children in their own way, still cannot decide their own sexual orientation, nor in many cases have their own bank account, and it kills me to know that even though I have these rights I have grown up in a world that still pays a woman less than a man.

There’s such and imbalance of power in our nation and around the world that the plight of women’s empowerment is likely not going to change for an estimated 100 more years. So for those reasons and more I believe that it’s time for women and the bold men who support them to rise up around the world to do whatever it takes to embrace women’s empowerment as a driver to change the globe. And, to the men who might read this book, I consider you bold and an ambassador for women and hope that you might also benefit from what I’m sharing. In any case, may we all see a benefit to the young women in our life so that their plight might be better than my mothers.

My best wish is that everyone reading embrace your true inner power to live an empowered life now and always. If you already feel empowered then I hope you will join me in mentoring women around the world who may benefit from learning what you have learned. Text the word WOMEN to 555-888 to stay in touch and share with us what you are doing to take action to empower women around the globe.

Warmly,

Bettina

Breaking Through Your Own Glass Ceiling: Unlocking Your Full and Hidden Potential With Your Master Key

At the time I initially started writing this book I had been on a soap box crying out about the inequities as it related to women in the work-place and women in business for a good part of my life. Many of the people that I had spoken to would refer to this inequity as the proverbial “glass ceiling.” What I observed year over year from listening to real stories from real women who did not experience parity in the workplace or as it related to growing their small businesses was seemingly like a glass ceiling. In fact, I too was struggling to run my small business and not being afforded opportunities afforded men.

But when I started talking to both men and women about the original title: “It’s A Man’s World: How Successful Women Win In It,” I got push back from both men and, surprisingly, from women too. They seemed to point out that in fact, although there were inequities still around the globe related to the “glass ceiling” that what they identified was their own self-imposed limitations that stopped or blocked them from achieving success. Yes, it was, in part, the women themselves that stood in their way of success. Aha! There it was, the truth, or at the very least a part of my truth. After dwelling on the possibility that there might just be something to the notion that our own blocks might be at the helm of the “glass ceiling” problem I began to work on my mind-set, specifically working on having the courage to ask for what I wanted in business, leadership, love and life and what do you know, I got more than I expected.

As an example, when I briefly worked at a bank I invited both men and women to the table for loans and yep, men showed up in large number and only a few women found their way to the same opportunity. I had in fact invited more women than men as I know more women than men, but it was the men who came in with very little convincing and consequently they transacted tens of thousands of dollars more. The excuses ranged from “I’m not ready yet,” to “I’m not prepared yet, to “I’m not sure I have good enough credit,” and one woman even said, “I don’t have time as I have to get my nails done.” It was like the men and the women were in two different paradigms.

The timing for uncovering the truth couldn’t have been better. I was preparing to produce my first LIVE! Annual Women’s EmPOWERment Summit and I was an active female leader in the Seattle area. After discussing the topic with a radio host, Mike Siegal, he came up with a suggestion that the “glass ceiling” is a myth, and then everything fell into place. The title to this book became: “Breaking Through Your Own Glass Ceiling: Unlocking Your Full and Hidden Potential With Your Master Key (TM)”. Tada! My first goal to kick off 2020 was to put pen to paper and author my soul’s journey of “breaking through” my own self-limiting beliefs and to include feature stories from some of the women in my life.

“Breaking Through Your Own Glass Ceiling” is a shared memoir of dozens of women whose souls intersect min and in their own words they share their quest to “become master communicators, to speak pro-actively and to listen empathetically in ways that command respect and trust.”  (Marian York)

The stories encompass tragedy to triumph as told by all of us, my master teachers/mentors and mentees who have broken through their own glass ceilings with their master keys (modalities, mantras, lessons, teachings, sayings, and more) and that have helped unlock the jail to which they held the key.

“Breaking Through” is broken down into four parts: 1) business, 2) leadership, 3) love, and 4) life! Each chapter has a beautiful image and a powerful quote to open the chapter. Each part is not contiguous so that you can read any part of the book at any time. It will also include exercises to log or journal notes to self. The book begins with a dedication to my granddaughter Lilith who will carry on the torch when I leave this earth. It’s a story of empowering women, but men will benefit and contribute to it. The art has been licensed from the heirs of one of my favorite artists, Laurel Burch, who sadly passed away in her forty’s. Each chapter title is relatable. The quotes are iconic. The book also includes the work of Marian York, who sadly passed in 2007, and to whom I promised that I would keep her work alive in perpetuity and I’m finally going to get to live into that promise.

My launch party is also being planned to coincide with the LIVE! Annual Women’s EmPOWERment Summit 20/20 event in Seattle June 10, 2020. Save the date! There is a possibility that the Summit will naturally roll into a 3-day event. The Summit is an event that I have successfully produced in the years past. The goal this time around is to inspire an uprising of female empowerment by producing a decade of summits around the world beginning in Seattle where I reside.

My BIG wish is that Mel Robbins joins the journey as keynoter on this 10-city, 10-year journey! I am envisioning having the book and the Summit fully funded so that I may travel in March to Kowloon, just outside of Hong Kong, to print at a small shop that I visited in 2016 and to whom I promised that I’d be back to print my book. The Summit is for and about women’s change, choice and power! Jump into action to gain a powerful new attitude in business, leadership, love and life! Share what you are doing to empower women in your world by texting the word WOMEN to 555-888 so that I may support you in empowering women around the world! Here’s to one and all who may benefit from my life’s work!

Warmly,

Bettina

Bettina’s Social Club LIVE Kick-off Tasting Event, July 10, 2017 at Duke’s Chowder House on Lake Union

Connecting amazing, like-minded friends for fun-filled foodie tours… savouring Seattle’s finest signature dishes, indulging in hand-crafted cocktails & spirits, and imbibing in award-winning wine & beer pairings.

Thanks to Pankaj Nath, along with a few other friends, I am kicking off a new foodie themed social club …Bettina’s Social Club, to bring together like-minded people together to have lip-smacking, great food, good fun, to get to know one another, make a difference, and to bring joy into all of our lives.

After years on a hiatus from hosting large scale events I was inspired by an imromptu gathering at Duke’s where we all got to talking about how much fun it was to meet up, nosh and meet like-minded friends. Coincidently I had been dreaming of creating a gathering that included networking and tasting that could occur anywhere in the world, coast to coast, or right here in my own backyard.

Not sure what, where or when we will continue to meet, but this much I know… I am open to any discovery that includes great food venues where large gatherings are possible, and where our group can be treated to VIP service, savor signature dishes, indulge in hand-crafted cocktails, award-winning wine & beer pairings, or imbibe in a stiff drink that features a spirit that is to die for!

I am specifically looking for venues that are loved by locals and travelers alike. Call me with any suggestions at: 206-349-4297 for culinary adventures in Seattle and on the Eastside.

If you represent a restaurant, bar scene, live music venue, specialty food store, distillery, winery, brewery, spa, cruise, museum, caterer, or you believe that you have the ultimate foodie desitnation and you would like to book an event with us, give me a call to discuss details, theme and format.

The main benefits to you includes reaching influential business professionals and foodies to introduce your new restaurant, venue, club, food product or specialty store to and have an opportunitiy to turn them into loyal fans.

I look forward to sharing some of my favorite culinary hot spots with those of you that can join in the fun! 😉

Join Us for our Bettina’s Social Club LIVE Kick-off Tasting Event!

Bettina Carey Rebooted!

As many of you may know, beginning in the Spring of 2013 I began the journey of working with CEO & Founder, Duke Moscrip of Duke’s Chowder House, in the role of Marketing Director. In 2014, I started transforming his memories into his memoir and seafood cookbook. As Art Director, Producer and Food Stylist I helped envision and bring to fruition Duke’s new cookbook, “As Wild As It Gets . . . Duke’s Secret Sustainable Seafood Recipes.”. In my final year as Publicist, I oversaw the publishing and publicity of the book, garnering earned media locally, regionally and nationally.

Highlights of my tenure included cruising with Duke, Executive Chef, “Wild” Bill Ranniger and his son as well as Michele Edwards who was also able to join us on the Holland America Cruise to Alaska with the South West Historical Society & AAA, traveling to Maui with our photographer, Ingrid Pape-Sheldon, as well as attending Publicity Training by Steve Harrison in New York last year. I even got to go to China with our print broker, Bob Bracht, and graphic designer, Aileen Yost, to oversee the 2nd printing of Duke’s cookbook which was an amazing cultural adventure. Along the way I worked with a really cool team and cannot even begin to share the gratitude that is in my heart for the team, the brand and Duke.

After nearly four years working with the Duke’s Chowder House brand exclusively, which was a huge opportunity and one that I am so grateful to have experienced, I am back and better than ever before!

I look forward to sharing more details about this unique client and the impact that the work has had on my own personal brand and how it has expanded my expertise as well as the impact the journey has had on my life. Stay tuned…:)
